From the Mid-1870s until the mid-1920s Lyman was known as Groce's Stop due to a store in town that did wonders for this town's economy. In 1924, Pacific Mills bought over 700 acres from the Groce family and built the Lyman Printing and Finishing Mill. Over just a few years, the mill expanded and 375 homes were built for the workers of the plant. This is still, today, Pacific Mills' largest textile mill, so it's no wonder the town received its name from the president of the company, Mr. Arthur Lyman.
